When water freezes it expands and its this expantion in your pipes that causes it to burst.
Burst pipes are all to common in the winter months.
Most homes have had at least one pipe burst in their lifetime.

Any pipes that could be subjected to freezing temperatures should be lagged with the correct size lagging. This stops the chances of the water freezing inside your pipes.
